Construction Update

Weather permitting, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close Wilmeth Rd. beginning Monday, Feb. 6 in order to begin the reconstruction of U.S. 75 at that location. The Wilmeth Rd. bridge over U.S. 75 is expected to be closed through June. In conjunction with the closure of Wilmeth, beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 through 6 a.m. Saturday morning, both directions of U.S. 75 will be closed at Wilmeth for demolition of the bridge over the highway. The demolition of the bridge will continue over the frontage roads on Wednesday, Feb. 15 beginning at 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

TxDOT will also close northbound and southbound SH 5 to through traffic at the East Fork of the Trinity River just south of Melissa on Monday, Feb. 6 through the spring. The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of the traveling public as well as accelerate the completion of the construction on the replacement bridge.

Message boards and detour signs have been placed ahead of the closure to notify and guide drivers approaching the project. TxDOT would like to thank area drivers for their continued patience and cooperation as crews work diligently to complete this vital project as soon, and as safely, as possible.

For additional transportation related information please visit the TxDOT Website www.txdot.gov or www.mckinneytexas.org/construction/

Power Watch - Conservation Needed

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc. (ERCOT), system operator for the state’s bulk transmission grid, set record highs for capacity this week. The Energy Emergency Alert procedures are a progressive series of steps that allow ERCOT to bring on power from other grids if available, beginning with a Power Watch (Energy Emergency Alert Level 1).

Consumers and businesses are strongly encouraged to reduce their electricity use during peak electricity hours from 3 to 7 p.m. Contact the utility company or transmission provider listed on your electric bill for information about power outages in homes or business, or about rotating outage procedures for their area.

Wildfire prevention necessary in extreme heat, dry conditions

As North Texas continues through the relentless heat of summer, seemingly-harmless things like outdoor grilling, dragging safety chains behind a trailer or carelessly discarding a lit cigarette can start a dangerous wildfire. While some fires may be caused by acts of nature like lightning strikes, approximately 90 percent of wildfires in Texas are caused by people. The most common causes for wildfires include:

* Arson
* Campfires
* Discarding lit cigarettes
* Burning debris
* Playing with matches or fireworks

With persistent dangerous wildfire conditions predicted throughout the summer and 97 percent of the state experiencing unprecedented drought, the McKinney Fire Department urges extra caution when it comes to any outdoor activity that could cause a spark. Wildfires are dangerous and deadly, destroying not only vegetation, but threatening persons and property.

Do your part to keep Texas and McKinney safe from wildfires. For more information, visit http://txforestservice.tamu.edu/.
