Important Safety Information
Summer is here and safety is essential. The following information was taken from an e-newsletter by Richard Hawk, a well known national safety consultant and conference speaker and is used with his permission.
Though close to 10 million children under 5 die annually of disease--27,000 per day. A comparatively small number--829,000 per year, 2,270 per day--die from accidents. Still that's 2,270 children every day that won't get a chance to grow up from something that is often easy to prevent. In late 2008 the World Health Organization issued its first annual report on the problem, listing the top five killers of children and steps that can be taken to combat them.
Traffic injuries: 260,000 deaths per year, most victims are passengers in vehicles. The solutions are familiar and include seat-belt laws, speed limits and stiffer drunk-driving penalties. REMINDER: as of June 1 it is required that all children under the age of 8 to use a car safety seat unless over 4’ 9” tall.
Drownings: 175,000 deaths per year. Parental supervision, CPR education and fences around swimming pools are among the solutions. REMINDER: ‘wings’ are not considered proper safety protection in the pool without a parent present. A child (about 2 or 3 years old) was recently noted playing by herself in the deep end of the Villas pool while Mom was sunning herself and not paying attention. This is a tragedy waiting to happen, folks!
Burns: 96,000 deaths per year. Infants are at the greatest risk. The danger goes down somewhat for kids in the 10-14 age range and rises for 15-19-year olds--perhaps because of access to matches/lighters and fireworks. Smoke alarms, parental policing, childproof lighters and burn centers all help.
Falls: 47,000 deaths per year. Caregiver stress or inattention, non-childproof environments and low maternal education are risk factors. Redesigned playgrounds and furniture, parental-education programs and window guards are among the solutions.
Poisonings: 45,000 deaths per year. Kids under 1 year old are in the most danger. Child-resistant packaging and simple measures to get poisons out of the house or keep them locked up can help.

Not mentioned above, but an important one to remember is to NEVER leave a child alone in a locked car with the windows rolled up. According to Wikipedia the temperature can get up to 30o hotter inside a car with the windows rolled up than the outside temperature. On a 90°F day that means it is 120°F inside the car.
Villias Heroes
On April 22, 2010, Ruth Arnold was one of 48 Award Nominees honored at the Volunteer McKinney Center during their 9th Annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration dinner appropriately titled, “A Matter of the Heart”. Ruth's volunteerism is just a continuation of her life-long pursuit in service to others. She is a nurse by profession — a Certified Case Manager for 18 years, and that caring and nurturing spirit still spills over in her daily life and volunteerism. How lucky we are that Ruth chose to leave her native Massachusetts to live with us here in Texas!
Click here to read the lovely poem presented to the nominees, at the ceremony. It is touching and well worth the read. Congratulations, and thank you, Ruth; you are a very special person.
We are aware that there are many of you out there, but we can’t honor you unless we know about you, so please contact us at scheskiewicz@tx.rr.com so that we may give you the print space and honor you so richly deserve.
While we are on the subject, let’s not forget those who serve on our Board of Directors and the various committees. The work they do is for the betterment of our community. Join them — it’s a worthy endeavor.
chairs at “no charge” for people that get tired along the many walkways. There is a great terrace restaurant in the De Galyer home overlooking White Rock Lake, as well as some more casual dining areas on sight. They also have high tea, concerts, and a lot more fun and enjoyment. Visit the sight at

ALERT!
The security company has reported several sightings of coyotes on the grounds in the early morning hours.
Forewarned is forearmed, so please be aware when walking in the mornings. Small dogs and children may be vulnerable!
The coyote's tail is used in threat displays. It becomes bushy and is held horizontally when the Coyote displays aggression. The coyote can run at almost 40 mph and can get over an 8' fence.
